Our Firm

Stacks/The Law Firm, Gold Coast, is a dynamic legal practice with offices located in Murwillumbah, Tweed Heads and Surfers Paradise.

Stacks/The Law Firm Gold Coast, formerly Halliday & Stainlay, began when Ted Halliday commenced legal practice in Murwillumbah in 1891, with a branch office at Coolangatta.  This office was the earliest legal firm on the Gold Coast.  Halliday teamed up with Leo Stainlay after the second World War, beginning a successful partnership. Bill Stainlay succeeded his father as a partner in 1969.

Halliday and Stainlay had dedicated and long serving staff, including 2 employees who worked for the firm for 44 years. This speaks volumes for the friendly and supportive environment provided by the firm, which continues today.

As Halliday & Stainlay came to the forefront of legal representation in the Tweed Valley, so did their commitment to the broader communities of the Tweed and Gold Coast areas.  Solicitors were admitted to practice law in both NSW and QLD and this interstate legal service continues today.

In 2000, Stacks/The Law Firm, a family legal firm based in Taree, merged with Halliday & Stainlay.

We are extremely proud of our rural traditions and values. Over the years Stacks/the Law Firm Gold Coast has been instrumental in the development of the Tweed’s rural and commercial industries, providing expert legal advice to the cane and banana growing industries of the Tweed.  We have represented the Tweed Shire Council for over 60 years.

Tony Smith, the Managing Director, joined the firm in 1990, and leads a team of experienced and knowledgeable solicitors. Stacks/the Law Firm Gold Coast provides specialist legal service in the areas of:
